Eugene McGuiness Lion (Domino)
4/5
By: Stan Morgan

The first single from Eugene McGuinness’ second solo album has arrived at just the right time of the year. It might be the talk of dancing skeletons, ventriloquist’s dummies and creating stitched-up freaks in a lab, but there’s something disturbingly creepy about the track, and just in time for a certain pagan festival. I’ll give you a clue, it’s not Christmas.
The song is carried by McGuinness’ theatrical delivery, which jumps around in tone and rhythm without sounding fey, instead coming across as manic and intense. There’s a nice little middle-8, and the chorus is more than solid, but the whole ends up being more than a sum of its parts. When he hasn’t been spending his time being a solo artist McGuinness has been playing in Mikes Kane’s backing band, but luckily ‘Lion’ far outstrips anything Kane has managed so far in his career. If this trend in quality continues it’s not difficult to see their roles reversing in the near future.
