Real Estate – Days (Domino)

4/5

By: Hayley Leaver

Following up such a well-acclaimed debut, as New Jersey’s Real Estate have done, should probably be a fairly daunting task. However it seems that nothing can be too unnerving for Martin Courtney and pals, judging by the effortlessly gentle fuzz that makes up Real Estate’s sophomore album, Days.

Opening with a big pile of nostalgia that carries on seamlessly, Days is the epitome of a laid back and dare I say it, chilled out, homage to lo-fi garage pop/rock. Real Estate haven’t strayed a single step away from the sound that boosted them into favour with the rest of that ‘crowd’ that surfaced back in ’09 – it’s just as mildly catchy yet mind-numbingly placid.

Album highlight ‘Kinder Blumen’ may sound like it’s the latest celebrity chef, but it’s an almost four minute instrumental dream, and a direction they’d do well to continue in. And it’s matched in its eminence only by ‘Out of Tune’, which is a perfect, sparkling yet solemn example of why Real Estate are that bit better than the rest of the dopy lo-fi bands that are spouting second albums right about now.

Things become a little confusing with ‘Younger Than Yesterday’ – more than just a sprinkling of ‘Losing My Religion’, no? – before the final glowing breeze of ‘All The Same’. A definite grower, Days is flawless in its modesty, deserving a second, third, or perhaps fifth listen before you write it off as little more than the perfect summer background album.
