‘Grand Scam (Lyrical Exercise)’ is a short burst of attitude from Azealia Banks, a New Yorker with a penchant for the c-word and crisp, punchy vocals. The track gives her an opportunity to show off her chops over a close, tight beat, resulting in a relentlessly percussive track that would be a test of endurance if it was any longer than its one and a half minutes.
Sadly the track doesn’t get anywhere near reaching the heights of her previous single ‘212’, severely lacking in anything resembling a melody and not giving Ms Banks an opportunity to show off what might prove to be her secret weapon in the future, her soulful singing voice. It’s futile to try to argue that the artist doesn’t have enough talent, but after listening to ’Grand Scam’ it’s safe to assume that far better things can and will come from the foul mouth of Azealia Banks in the future.
