Leonard Cohen - Show Me The Place (Columbia)
4/5
By: Stan Morgan
Leonard Cohen can’t make bad music anymore. It’s simply not possible for someone of his standing to put out something that will be criticised, even if parts of it do sound a bit like the Cheers theme tune.
‘Show Me The Place’ is taken from Old Ideas, Cohen’s first studio album in eight years, due for release in January and described as his most ‘spiritual’ work to date. This teasing track certainly fits that mould, containing heavy biblical references and questions about morality.
Cohen’s voice has always been his defining quality and it dwarfs the rest of the track, his whisper elevated high above the strings and piano of the backing and giving Tom Waits a run for his money in terms of gravel. Tales of lament are what Leonard Cohen does best, and ‘Show Me The Place’ is a case of if it aint broke don’t fix it, a strategy which will hopefully serve him well for many years to come.
