Daughter The Wild Youth EP (Communion)
5/5

Sometimes, simplicity is overrated. A couple of months back I was sent to review a show of a band who shall remain nameless for my student paper. This particular group were from the school of layering synth upon synth to create just a haze of white noise in what was a wholly underwhelming, and at time irritating, performance. Admittedly, this is pretty unrepresentative of their record but still, this wall of noise thing can get a little tired. So it was such a revelation to listen to the sublime new EP from Daughter.
Daughter, comprised of 21-year-old Elena Tonra and her boyfriend Igor Haefeli somehow manage to say so much with so little. Over just four tracks, the beauty of Tonra’s voice and song writing is extremely powerful. ‘Medicine’ is hauntingly beautiful with the vocals accompanied by almost nothing but simple piano chords, the lyrics being the focus of the song with lines like “You could still be/What you want to be/What you said you would/When I met you”. This way of blending simple elements to create something intricate is reminiscent of Zola Jesus’ Stridulum II, both being incredibly forceful but also delicate. This EP and its predecessor His Young Heart both display Tonra’s incredible talent and the beauty in her voice. Simplicity rules.
