The Twilight Sad - Another Bed (Fat Cat)

2/5

By: Stan Morgan

While The Twilight Sad’s first two albums rank up there with my personal favourite albums EVER, the taster the band released for their third effort No One Can Ever Know, ‘Kill It In The Morning’, was a severe disappointment. Gone were the washes of crushing guitars and the both delicate and brash use of dynamics, replaced by a lazy, chugging attitude that threw in some synths just for the hell of it. ‘Another Bed’ is an improvement on that first taste, but still falls short of everything the band had previously achieved on their earlier LPs.

The ill-conceived idea to go down the synth route remains, one followed by many bands in the past (and a course of action that managed to make people actually miss Editors’ earlier sound), with a pulsing synth bass line and a Depeche Mode chorus that does nothing to showcase singer James Graham’s formidable lung capacity. Flat production puts the final nail in the coffin and will leave fans begging the band to bring back the noise in the future.
