Grimes – Genesis (4AD)

4/5

By: Stan Morgan

Half woman, half haircut Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, has been steadily growing in reputation over the past year or so, a slow build that will culminate in the release of her debut album Visions in February. ‘Genesis’ is a more gentle affair than her last single ‘Oblivion’, with a harp and piano-propelled electronica backing with Boucher’s girl-like vocals falling in layers and settling like snow over the top.

You get the feeling that in a parallel universe Boucher might have turned into a Rhianna-esque pop diva, but luckily for us she’s continued to turn out tracks like this that are slightly more refined and therefore acceptable for us indie types to enjoy without guilt. Comparing Grimes’ music to Bjork’s is a futile exercise, as everything sounds like Bjork these days, but ‘Genesis’ is the kind of track that the queen of Iceland would take time to be proud of, in between designing mental, overpriced apps.
