oOoOO - NoWayBack (feat. Butterclock) (3 Syllables)

3/5

By: Stan Morgan

San Francisco producer Chris Greenspan, aka oOoOO, has been pretty quiet since his debut self-titled EP was released at the height of the witch house movement in 2010. Since then the genre has moved on in a big way, having been incorporated into some of the most interesting electronica and rap over the past year.

‘NoWayBack’ is the first track to be released from his forthcoming Out Love Is Hurting Us EP, out in April. It’s co-written by and features Butterclock, whose vocals are laid over Greenspan’s predictably creepy but unoriginal electronica backing, but unfortunately don’t add anything significant to the track. Plonking a distorted, almost atonal female vocal on top of a track seems to be par for the course for the genre, sometimes producing spectacular results, but in this case coupled with an uninspiring backing, the end result feels slightly lazy and muddled. The genre has moved on, and on the evidence of this oOoOO needs to catch up.
