Alt-J – Matilda (Infectious)

3/5

By: Stan Morgan

For an inventive, forward thinking band struggling for attention with a million others, a quirky name is not enough. ‘Matilda’ is the most straightforward song released by the band (whose name I refuse to type out of laziness/principle), and it’s a clear shot at the big time, or at least at the bigger than nobody having ever heard of you time.

Singer Joe’s vocals are initially very irritating, but become easier on the ear with repeat listens, and despite my criticism they probably add to the band’s unique appeal, if you’re in to that sort of thing. It’s not the best thing the band have done by a long shot, but it’s nice enough, and not likely to offend anyone. For those looking for some of the band’s more inventive work, b-side ‘Fitzpleasure’ is a decent example, but ‘Matilda’, rightly or wrongly, is likely to be the one that finally gets the band some mainstream attention.
