Glide - 'Curvature Of The Earth' (Cooking Vinyl)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak
As one of the trailblazers of the lippy, cocksure northern guitar combos, Echo and The Bunnymen's Will Sergeant could hardly be accused of lacking confidence.
For it is Sergeant, under the pseudonym Glide, who has temporarily abandoned elegant flourishes of guitar-god pomp for mostly moody, hypnotic instrumentals a la Death in Vegas. So not all that different from The Bunnymen, then.
Whilst the likes of 'Kraken' sounds darkly epic after just a single listen, Sergeant ensures 'Curvature of the Earth' isn't all dingy; the dreamy 'Expo 68' has more than a hint of The Polyphonic Spree's 'Soldier Girl' about it whilst 'Chopped Hog', a sludgy, brutally simple Oasis-esque drone-rocker, shows Sergeant isn't ready to forsake his rock roots entirely as Glide.
Certainly more than an indulgent muso side-project then, and interesting enough to warrant the attention of those outside Echo and the Bunnymen's hardcore fanbase.
