Pink Grease - 'This Is For Real' (Mute)

2/5

By: Lauren Gallagher

Pink Grease - 'This Is For Real'Something about Pink Grease just tries too hard. Perhaps that's the point.

Well, there's no denying the loudness of 'This Is For Real's punky sass, which lands them smack in the middle of today's current trends for eighties-esque, irking synth-enhanced rock, but it lacks truly addictive qualities. 'Remember Forever' attempts to seduce with its jerky 'ooh shadooby,' and question-answer streak, but its insistence is taxing rather than infectious.

The canine yelps of 'Fever' are not much help, and like the rest of 'This Is For Real' clearly strives for a pop-punk riot while surrendering to a less charismatic stab at Electric Six.

Pink G.R.E.A.S.E.'s one salvation, however, arrives in the form of 'Wind Up Bird,' since its faux rockabilly intro and audacious twang stands out the way a song should. Too bad the remainder of 'This is For Real' didn't follow suit.
