Tiger Army - 'III: Ghost Tigers Rise' (Hellcat)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak
Proud exponents of 'psychobilly' they may be, but SoCal trio Tiger Army aren't ensnared within a ghoulish web of inaccessibility, silly stage-wear and 'scary' impressions of naughty rock bogeymen.
Lyrical references to devil's gardens, pirate bones and seas of fire abound, but at heart 'III:
Ghost Tigers Rise' is a most conventional record: a collection of straightforward, stripped-down, melodic punk rock, with a touch of (early) Offspring and Rocket From The Crypt about a lot of these tracks.
The underlying country tinges never being overstated, Nick 13's vocals never falling the wrong side of theatrical camp. Although a change of pace wouldn't be unwelcome during the first half of the album, when ska-tinged existentialism ('What Happens?') can sit alongside 50s-style romantic croon ('Through The Darkness'), it's hard to complain.
