Rico - 'Violent Silences' (Artful)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak
Rico is a Scottish solo artist with a penchant for sullen, brooding introspective industrial metal a la Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode-ish gothic synth-pomp ruminating.
If this doesn't sound like your cup of tea, bear with us. For whilst brutish, meat n' potatoes opener 'Dawn Raid' suggests a petulant angst-fest of a sophomore album to follow, this is doesn't actually materialise. And if, like rockfeedback, you can temporarily
put aside memories of the wonderful depiction of Mr. T Reznor on 'Celebrity Deathmatch' ('you. just. don't. understand!!') and all related pre-conceptions, 'Violent Silences' represents an above-average metal album.
'Recommended Dose' and the atmospheric, ghostly title-track evoke the supine sprawl of
The Cure's 2000 LP 'Bloodflowers', whilst the ballsy, monumental, f**king heavy 'Freefall' is consummate 21st century hard rock. A bug-eyed cover of Talking Head's 'Psycho Killer' seems fairly appropriate. Definitely better than anticipated in the outset.
