Mark Joseph - 'Scream' (14th Floor)
2/5
By: Lauren Gallagher
DIY musician Mark Joseph has decided to rework his debut album 'Scream', now out on 14th Floor Records - the question is: did we really need it again?
In 2003 Joseph released 'Scream' all by his lonesome, covering all bases from promotions to distribution. Now, he's got some fancy production-credits (Mark Tenner - Aerosmith, Paul Buckmaster - Elton John), adding some strings to this primarily guitar-driven work. And it all seems a bit much.
Troublesome, since Joseph's vocals are earnest, the guitar bluesy, and one wonders, if it was all stripped back to basics, wouldn't all sound better than this over-produced MOR-harking effort? A mixture of ballads and jams, Joseph will no doubt satisfy those middle-agers trying to 'catch up' on their rock listening - but instead of more 'easy listening', they should put on some Ryan Adams and be done with it.
