The Vacation - 'Band From World War Zero' (Echo)

Funny. LA garage outfit The Vacation open their debut album with track 'White Noise', which sounds strikingly, disarmingly similar to the start-stop stutter of The White Stripes' 'Hardest Button to Button'. Funny.
Otherwise, The Vacation scream, squirm, and beg Lalaland to get up off of its sun-drenched arse and shake it. Ben Tegal's often flat vocals can prove grating, however, and - resultantly - a majority of the effort smacks of middling monotony; songs tend to run together in a melange rather than distinct musical ditties.
'Make Up Your Mind', though, is the most thrilling of all tracks, the guitar rising to dizzying, vertiginous heights, no doubt the substance of future moshing. Nonetheless, The Vacation is not exactly standout material, but maybe they'll be able to at least give LA the righteous kick in the backside it deserves. Time will tell.
