Misty's Big Adventure - 'The Solar Hi-Fi System' (SL Records)

2/5

By: Clara Burtenshaw

Misty's...'September is clearly the month for crazy concept albums. Misty's Big Adventure, remind us that, sometimes, it's better to just not expect anything, from anyone, ever.

Recent single 'Night Time Better Than Daytime' offered a brief taste of the multi-horned, part reggae, part small-band, part-indescribable sound of this Birmingham

nine-piece band, who, live must be quite something.

Whether the punchy, hook-laden, joky-pop songs translate as well on the non-visual medium of CD, however, is an altogether more depressing story. A cacophonous caper, it might be. The cosmically comic kind of caper it was meant to be? No.

More like a bad joke gone awry. The truth is MBA's strength lies in those songs with no comic focus, the straightforward indie songs where orchestral musicianship and sincerity shine through. In this sphere, I'm sure there's much more adventure left in

Misty yet.
