Sum 41 - 'Chuck' (Mercury)
3/5

Sum 41 - youthful scamps from Montreal way, daters of Avril Lavigne, chums of Good Charlotte, general popular pop dudes. Well, along comes 'Chuck' trying to showcase the more mature, developed and musically-rounded, fertilized Sum. And, magically, that statement isn't as bullshit as it seems.
'Chuck', inspired by a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo in May while shooting a charity documentary, is dedicated to Chuck Pelletier, a UN representative who saved the lives of the terrible foursome, while gunfire broke out in their hotel lobby. Pretty emo, eh?
This mighty angsty, but distinctly more lyrically complex, politically aware and socially conscious material sounds more like an album from fellow Canadians Billy Talent than their associated, commercial counter-parts. Tracks like 'No Reason' and 'We're All To Blame' are daytime music TV gems; oh yes, the kids will be texting in to vote for these marvels at home-time, grubby Nokia and powdery Monster Munch in hand.
Yes, in way of rhymes, melodic inclination and general subject-matter it remains simplistic, but we give a respectful thumbs-up to the youngsters. It seems the Sums are truly trying to make something of themselves as musicians - presenting this new, distinctly heavier, rougher and admirably more musical third release.
