The Detroit Cobras - 'Baby' (Rough Trade)
3/5

It now seems like the logical extension to the post-White Stripes garage rock revival/re-gurgitation (delete as applicable).
Bypassing almost completely even mere lip service to originality, the DC's do covers album - 'Baby' is their third such release-of snappy, obscure 60s tunes. A cute concept, but one that thanks to Rachel Nagy's bracing vocals and the quick-fire cool with which the band rattle off these tunes transcends mere novelty.
'Baby' is good fun, whether the band are showcasing their last-gang-in-town bravado on 'I Wanna Holler (But The Town's Too Small'), or messing around with the concept of the girl-group ballad on 'Mean Man' or 'It's Raining.' Not complicated, but certainly entertaining.
The sole original composition on 'Baby' isn't a wild detour either; a combination of brazen, AC/DC style innuendo and classic Stones melody entitled 'Hot Dog Eat' - sample lyric: 'It takes a lot of dogs/To satisfy a girl like me.') Oooh, matron, etc.
