Bronze Age Fox - 'Compilation' (Bagatelle Records)

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

Bronze Age Fox - 'Compilation'A 'best of' collection from a band you've probably never heard of might not sound like the most appealing concept at first, but this round-up of genial, Bristolian electro-indie lays on the charm and craft in great dollops.

Bronze Age Fox genuflect at the church of Belle and Sebastian on more than one occasion on this album (hell, there's even a twinkling little track called 'Books' here). And Grandaddy's country-fried, pastoral-pop is evoked, as is classic-era Boo Radleys, both in terms of BAF's horn-drenched melodies and Dominic Jones' expressive croon.

Plus, while appropriating the Beautiful South's AOR romanticism during 'Wood On The Fire', or camping it up theatrically - with Jones affecting a gravity-defying falsetto on the Scissor Sisters-ish 'Show Me Something More' - this lost anthology is polite and polished and thoroughly non-threatening. But - somehow - enchantingly so.
