Coachwhips - ‘Peanut Butter & Jelly Live At The Ginger Minge’ (Narnack)
3/5
By: Joshua K
Your intrepid rockfeedback scribe first stumbled upon Coachwhips a year ago, at then-trendy nightspot Lit while there to see a friend's band. I witnessed the club turn into a heaving, sweaty hipster hell - a hundred, jam-packed bodies flailing to 30 minutes of crunchingly-chaotic garage rock, with unintelligible vocals shouted through megaphones, distortion boxes and the kitchen sink.
'Peanut Butter & Jelly Live At The Ginger Minge' (nope, me neither) is the third Coachwhips LP. Just to be difficult, it is not actually a live album. However, the above description is a perfect encapsulation of the Coachwhips shtick: loud, shouty, snotty, fast, wilfully rough around the edges, and lyrically stoopid in a 'too smart for our own good' manner. Think Billy Childish records, but with lyrics and song-titles by The Ramones ('Oops. Uh. Uh.' 'Ya No Ya Wanna.' 'I Made A Bomb.' 'Did You Cum?').
Put another way: the ten songs on 'Peanut Butter...' (ahem) whip by in a 21-minute blur, leaving you feeling slightly seedy and yet strangely invigorated. It's just the right length for this record, though. Any more and we think we may be compelled to break something - or to run over small animals with a large truck.
Coachwhips wouldn't have it any other way.
