Simple Plan - 'Still Not Getting Any' (Lava)

... So there we were at the Reading Festival 2004. US hardcore veterans Sick Of It All had just taken to the Concrete Jungle Stage on the Saturday evening. We're standing at the crowd's periphery when a fellow festie goer next to us makes an astute observation. 'Sick Of It All'? That's a bit bloody miserable, isn't it?' Indeed. When you're a successful rock musician performing to an enthusiastic international audience at the top end of a major festival bill: surely things can't really be all that bad?
Simple Plan would argue that actually; it is. 'Still Not Getting Any' must rank as one of the most petulant additions to the modern pop punk canon. Whilst - for some - shifting a couple of million copies of your debut album across the globe, and all the accompanying fame and adulation that goes with it, would be sufficient. Alas, Simple Plan still complain. A lot.
There is very little they seem contented with. Their parents don't understand them, their friends are all back-stabbing, two-faced swines, and the quality of American television isn't very good. If you've heard Good Charlotte, you'll know the score.
And though the reasonably fortuitous grandeur of 'Thank You' and 'Welcome To My Life' prove they can write tunes, Simple Plan's incessant carping tends to grind very quickly. Still, no pleasing some people, is there?
