Woodbine - 'Best Before End' (Domino)

2/5

By: Lauren Gallagher

WoodbineNot everyone has jumped on the indie dance bandwagon, including Woodbine and their determined efforts in sleepy slowcore. Quiet is not a bad thing; we all need a rest from headbanging and hipshaking endeavors; but only continue reading if you can handle something more mellow than your most botanic hippie child.

Guitarist/keyboardist Rob Healey (formerly of Cornershop), joined forces with Graeme Swindon (guitars) and vocalist Susane Dillane to form the gentle and reflective Woodbine, with their first release for Domino in 2002. Their sophomore effort is a gentle mix of breezy prairie songs ('I Feel Fine'), whispering vocals, and fuzzy feedback ('Me Me Me').

The songs contrast between electric shoegazer-esque noodlings, and a tender acoustic pluck. Yet because of such restraint, 'Best Before End' is neither essential nor offensive. Definitely decent in the way of a muffled aural hangover massage. So pleasant enough, but nothing to get fussed about; that'd be just too much disturbance over such a brittle endeavour.
