Fulc - 'Embrace Destroy' (Stunted)

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

Fulc - 'Embrace Destroy'Of all the sub-genres that have pervaded alternative rock over the past few years, few expose the gulf between us Brits and our American cousins quite as glaringly as nu-metal.

Perhaps it's our national characteristic as restrained, decorous types that proves so inhibiting; really, all that unbound, vociferous angst and lack of demure self-control...well, it's just not cricket, is it?

This kind of stereotyping is something that FULC have been attempting to rectify. Their new mini LP has the suitably nihilistic title, employs Nirvana's sinister quiet/turbulent loud dynamic, splenetic lyricism and a singer, Duane Walker, who employs a most Cobain-like growl.

And, sometimes, this combination succeeds, as on 'Wasting', or the bleakly atmospheric 'Owes Nothing', whilst some tracks, i.e. 'Pedestal', amble along half-heartedly, seemingly content to exist as nothing more than bog-standard meat n' potatoes hard rock.

Still, enough to suggest a worthy rival to Biffy Clyro in the making.
