The Lost Patrol Band - 'The Lost Patrol Band' (Burning Heart)

3/5

By: Lauren Gallagher

The Lost Patrol Band - 'TLPB'Talk about departure. The Lost Patrol Band's 2005 output sounds - sincerely - nothing quite like its predecessors.

Groundwork: Dennis Lyxzen, lead-singer of Swedish punk rock project The (International) Noise Conspiracy established The Lost Patrol as a side project to T(i)NC. A stark contrast to the raucous rumblings of T(i)NC, Lost Patrol's debut album 'Songs About Running Away' featured lovesick acoustic tunes apparently written with the hopes of coaxing back an ex-lover. Now, they head off in yet another direction (and with 'Band' tagged onto their name), bringing back the lively sounds of, deep breaths now, early 80's 'power-pop', as Lyxzen calls it.

Single 'Golden Times' is by far the standout track of the work, its guitar as rapid as the heartbeat of a new love, and full of the ensuing excitement and anxiety. Yet these are mostly peppy tunes, and occasionally Lost Patrol Band might remind one of The Cribs, but Lyxzen's troupe have not the bro-trio's raw energy nor their cracking frustration which is so fetching. Ramones and Buzzcocks also come to mind, but Lost Patrol are almost too polished in their revivalist effort; and, often, it all ends up a bit hackneyed.
