Diefenbach - ‘Set & Drift’ (Wall Of Sound)

2/5

By: Matt Tomiak

Diefenbach - 'Set & Drift'Talk about inauspicious timing. The week in which a career-spanning New Order compilation hits the shelves - a lesson in how invigorating, challenging and *interesting* electronic music can date back over a quarter of a century or more - this rather dreary, forgettable collection arrives at rockfeedback Towers.

Aside from the sleeve's uncanny similarity to the aforementioned New Order's 'Power, Corruption and Lies', there isn't much comparison on the Danish band's second LP. 'Set and Drift' is a soporific collection of woozy, insubstantial material, often lazily titled in a

'that-sounds-quite-cool-and-ethereal' fashion ('Streetlights', 'Skyline', that sort of thing).

Thus, it ends up sounding a bit like Athlete gone shoegazer. Or perhaps a tired, half-arsed Massive Attack trying to re-write 'Teardrop' (see 'It's Only Love'). So it is unlikely many record-buyers would find either of these propositions particularly attractive - and so 'Set And Drift' proves. Even the occasional interesting moment, such as the Elliot Smith-ish 'On The Move' can't save this largely lacklustre affair.
