Six By Seven - Club Sandwich at the Peveril Hotel (Saturday NIght Sunday Morning)
4/5
By: Matt Tomiak

Christ, are Six by Seven still going? Well, maybe not for much longer - but they're sure as hell not going down quietly. The sleeve notes here solemnly declare that this record represents the 'last recordings to be made and released' by the Notts doom-harbingers. The funeral tone is highly apposite, for behind that gratingly indie title lurks some f***ing dark stuff: a tinnitus-inducing tour de force of a requiem. Gentle it ain't: placed next to the unrelenting, visceral wallop of 'Club Sandwich at the Peveril Hotel', Mogwai are positively easy listening; My Bloody Valentine elevator music by comparison. Truly, this is music to plot brutal acts of vengeance to.
'Got to Find a Way out Of Here' resembles The Velvet Underground being bludgeoned by hoodie-clad scoundrels on a murky East Midlands street corner. 'I want to teach the children/I want to teach them love' growls Chris Olley in a manner that would persuade absolutely no sane parent to leave their offspring in his charge. Nor are the stalker-ish sentiments contained within the grandiose swoop of 'Sailing Around The Horn' likely to enhance Olley's prospects of work in the community. The notion of mild optimism is toyed with on the punchy, Kasabian-like 'I'm Gonna Try'; but that it is followed by the grinding industrial assault of 'Apocalypse Now' style-chopper assault of 'In My Hell' renders the cheerfulness somewhat fleeting, however.
Those wanting a soothing easy listen will have to look elsewhere, but as a final will and testament, this is fully uncompromising, grimly compelling stuff.
