M Craft - I Can See It All Tonight

People talk of 'punk-funk' and 'alt-country' in reverent terms but reference this whole 'folktronica' thing with much more distain, simply because it has a much sillier name. But within its amusingly titled and more sketchily drawn boundaries one finds music of real interest, ranging from Four Tet to Tunng, and most recently, one M Craft.

The mini album 'I Can See It All Tonight' sees him delve both in to the more traditional aspects of the sphere that birthed him, notably on the delicacies of the opening 'Dragonfly' and the breezier, could-be-Kings of Convenience cut that is 'Out In The Sun' whilst also thrusting the boat a little further out in to the electronic lake on the likes of a middle coupling of 'On the 389' and the comparatively raucous 'Come To My Senses'.

The impression given is one of an artist who seems to feel most at home with the less crowded compositions, but it's the other, more ambitious aspects of his pallet which suggest the arrival of M Craft might be the dawn of something special. Once he feels as comfortable with giving everything a go as he does with gently plucking away at guitars as others before him have perfected and many after him will continue to ape, things may just start falling in to place.

Even so, the way all the contingent aspects of 'I Can See It All Tonight' have landed on this current disc makes for a charming listen. But it's the excitement shown in the more daring moments, rather than the comfort in the devil he knows, that should be followed in future.
