We Are Wolves - Je Te Plie En Deux (Fat Possum)
4/5
By: Keri Kennedy
As one may have noticed, wolves have quite a presence in band names du jour (Wolf Parade, Wolf Tracks, Guitar Wolf, Wolfmother...), and now here's Montreal's second finest band (following only Les Georges Leningrad - of course) We Are Wolves, purveyors of fine screamo/electro weirdness as found on this, their debut LP.
Known faces on the city's circuit for a few years before getting round to performing live and finally recording this stomper (think lo-fi Les Georges, or a shambolic, less melodic Add N To X with an off-kilter wail from Alexander Ortiz and you're almost there), this one's a corker. 'Little Birds' is a shout and clap-along electroclash thumper, while 'Non-Stop' gets more sleazy, complete with buzzing guitars and panting voices that'd sound perfect on any Peaches album.
From there on in, 'L.L Romeo' and 'Snake Me' get dirty - minimal yet bass heavy, like the shy little sisters of the elder beast that is 'Vostrous Monstrous', which thunders along like a giant's heartbeat. On a lighter note, 'Namai-Taila-Cambodge (Go-Tabla-Go)' is, you've guessed it, a tabla-infused psychedelic time-out from all the ensuing chaos.
If you like your lyrics shoted, your bass to shake your innards and disco distorted, We Are Wolves will be your new favourite, if slightly f**ked-up, band.
