Aluminium - Aluminium (XL)

5/5

By: Gareth Roberts

Aluminium - AluminiumIt is rare that a record is released that is, to all extents and purposes, a work of creative brilliance. 'Aluminium' is a collection of avant garde orchestral recordings of songs written by Jack White, and is simply a breath of fresh air.

The songs, taken largely from White Stripes records (except for 'Never Far Away' which was lifted off the Cold Mountain soundtrack), were recorded by some of the best young classical musicians in Britain. The brainchild of Joey Talbot and Richard Russell (founder of XL Records), and fully endorsed by Mr White himself (legend has it that when he heard it for the first time this usually demure and guarded character was leaping from his chair in excitement), together, these talented impresarios have managed to create a piece of work which is something to behold.

Songs given the classical makeover include 'I'm Bound to Pack it Up', 'Astro' and 'The Hardest Button to Button', all of which have taken on a new dramatic life. In typical Jack White fashion, all elements of the release have been given as much thought as the music itself so as to deliver the listener with as much value as possible. The CD is limited to 3,333 releases, the LP to 999, whilst their respective prices are also in keeping with White's fascination of the number 3. In addition each release is accompanied by a set of Rob Jones designed printed cards, whilst the LP comes with an original section of Jones silk print.

All in all, it's a beautifully put together release, the songs are exquisite, the packaging delightful. This may be going a bit over-board, but it seems to me that as well as being essential for what it is, it may also be essential for what it means. For a long time now proponents of classical music have been trying to infiltrate the youth market. This release could be a pivotal catalyst in their success.
