Superhopper - Party Killers (Guilt Ridden Pop)

2/5

By: Charlie Potter

Superhopper - Party Killers 'Party Killers', most all of it, is pretty straight forward toe tapping rock. This itself isn't necessarily a bad thing - it thuds along at a good speed, there's nothing wrong with the riffs, and the song structures are well executed if numbingly traditional. However, a lot of people don't appreciate how hard it is to utilise traditional song structures - it's not just verse chorus verse chorus, there are bridges and a host of other stuff, but then there is for me always the feeling of 'why should I care if some band can do something that hundreds of other bands can do, whether it's difficult or not?'

The lyrics are the biggest let down on the album, and although they are pleasant and do have a party time feel to them, there are one too many words that are there just because they rhyme, and some of these are phrases we'll have heard again and again, even in this exact order - lines like 'well do ya do ya do ya do ya do ya wanna come over?' can only evoke a severe feeling of disappointment. Honestly, are there really so many people in the world that are concerned so much with getting people to 'come over' that they want to write songs about it? This is one of the few albums on which I have heard the words sung with conviction but still managed to think there was nothing particularly special about the vocals. There is however just enough to it to make you think Superhopper are indeed a proper band, though. They'd like you to take them seriously.

But this the sort of band who, if they were your friends, might have you very impressed. But they're not your friends. You're not impressed. Not much. At best you think 'yeah, I could do with hearing some good old generic rock', and thankfully this band are here for you. It's what they do. It's all they do. It's interesting, isn't it, the difference between the generic American rock bands and the generic British rock bands? Whereas the American ones are boring yet fast, tight, polished and wear hats, the British ones are just too weird and unsophisticated and don't wear hats at all.

Overall... too straight forward. Maybe I would like this if I was really normal, but let's face it, anyone who is doesn't really aspire to it. It amazes me the amount that this album just washes over - it has all the conventions of a really infectious record, but in all honesty, I'm looking forward to not having to listen to it again.
