Foo Fighters - Skin and Bones (Sony)
2/5

Yes folks, it's that time of year again, where the larger bands (or their record companies at least) feel that the public can't survive the festive season without some form of new release. This usually manifests itself in one of two ways, either a 'best of', or a live cd.
Foo Fighters have been clever here as they have managed to combine the two for their 'Skin and Bones' record, essentially an 'almost unplugged' (think Nirvana's seminal MTV set) performance recorded live in Los Angeles earlier in '06. All the hits are present, 'My Hero', 'Times Like These' and 'Best of You' sitting nicely amongst the slightly lesser known numbers.
For what is supposed to be an unplugged performance, there are a few too many musicians on the stage for my liking, indeed, at times it sounds like a full band show. Yet it does have its moments, a particularly rousing version of 'Everlong' gradually builds into a fantastic crescendo, rounding off a record that is perhaps essential for hardcore Foos fans, but not too enticing for anyone else.
After playing a central part in Nirvana's own 'Unplugged' record, Dave Grohl should be applauded for having the guts to release this. Unfortunately, the gamble hasn't quite paid off.
