Whirlwind Heat - I F##ked Up Types Of Wood (Brille)

4/5

By: Alex Lee Thomson

Whirlwind Heat - I F**ked Up Types of WoodMy speakers liked this one... so rarely are they treated to anything this special. The phrase 'over produced' can't even come close to this one as basically there isn't any production at all, with the whole album sounding like a rough, unmixed demo or session tape from the likes of Babyshambles... because of course, that's what it is. Following on from the decisive acclamation that 'Types Of Wood' received back at the start of 2006, this new version of the album has reworked all of the original tracks, or 'f**ked them up' as the band say, which is an unfair expression as they're far from 'f**ked'.

'Captain Cave' has been morphed into a childlike fairytale that sounds like a Playdays sing song, far from the empty and desperate original, moving this overhauled version of their best album to date along a few steps in conception. 'Slugger' has lost its Beck eccentricity but still pumps along, climbing and expanding with some nuances that would undoubtedly take you back to when Whirlwind Heat did the same with their 'Reagan EP'. This distinctive re-examination of their past work and accomplished modification of it is well processed and acts as a partner to the original rather than a replacement managing to beat of comparisons of the two, though I know for me this 'fucked up' version is so much more incisive.

You could pass this off as a desperate attempt at a re-release, novelty bound and in the end pointless, but as each track has taken on a whole new degree of erection to form a body of excitingly different and listenable music, you'd be spectacularly erroneous. If you've heard the original then this one will fuck with your mind, and if you've not, then this will supernaturally aggravate you into a whirl of country-lovin' blues.
