The Donnas - 'Spend The Night' (Atlantic)
3/5

If the Pink Ladies from the movie 'Grease' decided to form a band, goodness forbid, they'd probably sound something like this - the rampant, feisty San Francisco girls who all call themselves 'Donna'.
As ever, 'Spend The Night' (admirably, the quartet's fifth album) is full to its day-glo brim with boy-baiting, cherry-flavoured bubble-gum pop. Coming on like Guns N' Roses' bratty little sisters, they can even do a fairly convincing impression of The Hives ('Pass It Around') to liven things up just when you think proceedings can't even accelerate further (grinding, hammering first single, 'Take It Off').
Suitably, the lyrics are, most of the time, beyond even asinine; may we give you 'Dirty Denim' as an example? 'You look like you only slept for an hour/You smell like you haven't taken a shower/And your hair is so dirty/ It makes you look like you're thirty'.
Yes, The Donnas clearly aren't taking this rock n' roll lark too seriously, which constitutes a great deal of their throwaway charm. Very dumb - but a colossal cascade of fun nonetheless.
