Still Corners [Gig]

Following Still Corner's sell out album launch atCafe Otolast month, we'reexcited to announce another Londonshow for the band at Cargo in the New Year

STILL CORNERS
It was a dark and foggy night when Still Corners songwriter Greg Hughes first laid eyes on vocalist Tessa Murray (now filled out to a 4-piece by Leon Dufficy and Luke Jarvis). “It sounds stupid but it’s completely true,” he recounts. “I was on a train that was going to London Bridge. But for some reason it went to this other stop and I got out. And this other person got out. It was Tessa.” It was a fitting moment for the American musician who came to London to pursue a career in music. A devoted cinephile whose first release Remember Pepper recalls both the youthful tone of French New Wave and the unease of Italian horror. Fusing whispered intimacy to the emotional expansiveness of composer Ennio Morricone, Hughes crafts deceptively simple songs that linger like half-remembered dreams.

"Mixing 60s production with dream-pop shimmer, are these wafty British etherealists heralding a new golden age of indie?" The Guardian
“Uncomplicated, subtle but memorable songwriting” BBC

MY SAD CAPTAINS
Ed Wallis, singer and songwriter for My Sad Captains, wrote much of the material for the band’s second album ‘Fight Less, Win More’ alone in a borrowed house in San Francisco, over a lonely Thanksgiving. The songs flowed out of him, full of yearning for distant places and distant people.
Returning to England, the band – Jim Wallis (drums, keyboards, vocals), Nick Goss (guitar, sonics) and Dan Davis (bass) – decamped to the Cornish countryside to record the album in a barn where the natural acoustics combined with the band’s collective input brought the record to life. Highly personal and at times claustrophobic, the tracks opened out to become wide and expansive.
www.mysadcaptains.co.uk
‘Fight Less…’ is a joyous ride through the blessed strain of indie ploughed by US contemporaries like Grandaddy and Atlas Sound while still sounding like a product of home. Cherish this one’ - 8/10 Loud And Quiet

HOODED FANG
Now a five-to-seven-piece band (depending on the project in hand), Hooded Fang sprung to life in the attic bedroom shared by Daniel and April, the name coming from a classic children’s book written by Mordecai Richler. Conveniently, Nick Hune-Brown, keyboardist, lived downstairs. The band used to rehearse in that attic room and they would even put on shows for local and touring bands.
'Tosta Mista' is the brilliant debut UK album by Polaris Prize nominated Canadian collective Hooded Fang. With surf guitars, ‘verbed-out vocals and danceable ‘60s drum breaks, it’s a veritable garage rock riot. 'Tosta Mista' sounds like the whole of the Nuggets box set condensed into an album that’s just 23 minutes long. Still fiercely independent, Hooded Fang are releasing this latest album on their own Daps Records, which will be a fully-functioning entity putting out records by other artists this year.

Active Child [Gig]

ACTIVE CHILD
For Pat Grossi of Active Child, the last two years have been nothing short of enriching. Musically, Pat has worked within and appropriated a number of styles into his sound, from his early days singing with that heavenly voice as a choir boy to his more recent forays into laptop-assisted indie-pop made in his bedroom, best exemplified on 2010’s acclaimed Curtis Lane EP. His sound is so wide-ranging that he has found himself touring with many notable acts of differing genres, including dubstep producer James Blake, dreamy synth-pop of School of Seven Bells, and the indie-rock bands White Lies and White Rabbits.
Nothing quite prepares you for the leap that Pat has taken with his debut album, You Are All I See, out on Vagrant records. Recently, he has expanded his sonic ambitions and turned the studio into an instrument for a record that sounds cosmically huge and yet intimate all the same.
Reflecting on the album’s finished product, Pat says “I think more than anything, I see this debut release as a bridge towards something bigger and truer. Something I can look back on and think, ‘damn, you really did it’.” When you finally hear You Are All I See you’ll think the very same thing.

Gauntlet Hair [Gig]

GAUNTLET HAIR
Playing music together since they were teenagers, Andy and Craig relocated from Chicago to Denver three years ago to hone a sound that seems to have gained inspiration from enormity of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. In Denver, the duo is a crucial part of the avant-pop DIY scene that birthed contemporaries like Pictureplane, Woodsman and Hollagramz, and is anchored by the community built around all ages venue Rhinoceroplis. Beyond these inspiring cohorts, Gauntlet Hair finds itself mapping new boundaries for loud in pop music.
Over the last year and a half, Gauntlet Hair has seen its noise-pop anthems released on 7"s by tastemaker labels Forest Family ("I Was Thinking..." b/w "Our Scenery") and Mexican Summer ("Out, Don't..." b/w "Heave") respectively. And with the self-titled debut, the duo of Andy R (guitar, vox) and Craig Nice (drums, triggers) fulfill the booming promise of those now collectible singles.

NOVELLA
Novella are London-based Sophy Hollington, Hollie Warren and Suki Sou. They met in Brighton and formed the band in February 2010 after they all moved up to the capital. After spending months in each other's bedrooms writing and listening to bands like Polvo, Guided by Voices, Broadcast, Calico Wall and My Bloody Valentine, they decided to put a band together themselves and began playing shows in Autumn last year.

INCA GOLD
Inca Gold are aLondonbased 4-piece. Self-recorded, mixed and produced - their sound is defined by experimentation in the studio. Like Flying Saucer Attack and Deerhunter before them, they offer a bold and unique take on dream-like psychedelia.
Merging the tribal grooves of Gang Gang Dance, the guitar noise of The Jesus and Mary Chain and the clinical electronics of Portishead, all filtered through the bands strong pop aesthetic.

Pulled Apart By Horses [Gig]

Rockfeedback Concerts and Kilimanjaro presents...

PULLED APART BY HORSES
Pulled Apart By Horses are excited to announce that they are once again ready to charge from the starting stalls with the release of a brand new single, ‘V.E.N.O.M’ on the 16th of January 2012 through Transgressive Records. This will be the first opportunity to hear the results of the band’s work with legendary producer Gill Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters etc), ahead of the album’s release in 2012.
The band’s self-titled 2010 debut was a sonic maelstrom of screamo and hard disco riffage; here was heavy music that you could shake a tail feather to, pop music at its most corrupted. Dance music played by wiry punk weirdo's.
Essentially, the band’s much-talked about live show captured on plastic, early singles such as ‘Back To The Fuck Yeah’ and ‘High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive’ somehow ended up being played repeatedly by Radio 1, on whose playlists they gleefully sat like the mad tramp that’s gate-crashed the toff’s tea party.
But things move fast. Pulled Apart By Horses have already moved way beyond those early days. TheLeeds quartet have put meat on the brittle musical bones of their debut and with their second album have created a monster. It’s a much more muscular creature than its kid brother, one that could go toe-to-toe with titans like AC/DC, Nirvana or Queens Of The Stone Age and still come out looking pretty after twelve rounds.

THE COMPUTERS
The Computers are doing their upmost to inject excitement into rock n roll again. Recorded in four short days in the Californian home of John ‘Speedo’ Reis, ‘This Is The Computers’ was recorded live, to tape. That means no overdubs. No computers were involved (irony). There were no tweaks, corrections or auto-tuning – this is the real deal, baby. Warts and all, as Lemmy would say.

CITIZENS!
CITIZENS! met, tragically, at a house party. Lawrence was trying to chat up the host, Tom was there trying to impress a date. They both failed miserably. But Tom did walk in on Lawrence and Mike sitting, drunk, and, alone, listening to music. They foolishly decided to form a band. So, thanks to a couple of providential female rejections CITIZENS!came into existence.
They treated recording like a game, an experiment. They asked questions that other bands weren’t asking, and mixed elements they hadn’t heard mixed before. Most importantly they wouldn’t allow themselves to mimic any particular moment from decades past. Instead of REVIVALISM, they stand for ECLECTICISM.

YOUNG DREAMS
Fusing Tropicália, psychedelic rock, classical, symphonic arrangements and traditional pop recalling the classic sounds of Brian Wilson and Phil Spector, Young Dreams both adheres to and upends the conventional definitions of pop music, creating a sound that’s at once refreshingly familiar and daringly unique. After uploading three tracks on their Facebook page November 2010 the band quickly received an overwhelming response from both national and international music press and blogs. Animal Collective will be the kneejerk comparison – though Young Dreams has only heard a few of the band’s songs – but the band’s influences go deeper than those of their Brooklyn peers.

RAZIKA
Few bands can make you instantly recall your favorite summer. Your first kiss. The first time you snuck out of the house. In Bergen, Norway, Razika, comprised of four precocious 19-year-old girls, have discovered how to conjure these emotions, channeling a mix of innocence and rebellion, romance and heartbreak, and gift-giving and gun-slinging into their debut album ’Program 91’ (Smalltown Supersound). The album is a glorious contradiction; an exhilarating mix of ska, Riot Grrl, 60s girl groups, post-punk and upbeat, C86 pop that would make Phil Spector, The Specials and The Raincoats proud.

Franke And The Heartstrings (Pop Sex LTD night) [Gig]

Sunderland's finest purveyors of pop, Frankie & The Heartstrings bring their infamous indie club night Pop Sex to the Shacklewell Arms, London on Friday 24th February. The band themselves will be performing a headline live set, and will be performing a selection of new songs mooted for their second album, they're in the process of writing. Also appearing live are much-discussed Leeds newcomers Hookworms who have recently performed with the likes of The Men and Peaking Lights. In addition there will be special guest DJs yet to be announced.

FRANKIE & THE HEARTSTRINGS
The North East of England is seen as a particularly fertile breeding ground for a certain type of band: passionate, literate, pop-savvy groups of gentlemen hawking their well-dressed wares and spritely, arch guitar-driven pop music. Inevitably, there is always one band who rise to the top of their scene by virtue of being that bit better than the rest - a small but notable increment in quality that ensures excitement and longevity, and an ability to permeate the wider consciousness of the music world.Frankie & The Heartstrings are a five-piece from Sunderland, Great Britain, a town noted for its down-at-heel introspection that more than occasionally veers into self-loathing. In a way it’s not surprising that it pushes up bands who, musically, seem the very opposite of that. Comprised of Frankie Francis (vocals), Michael McKnight (guitar), Mick Ross(guitars and keys), Steven Dennis (bass) and Dave Harper (drums), Frankie & The Heartstrings are a heart-racing, foot-stomping traditionally brilliant British guitar band.
www.frankieandtheheartstrings.com

HOOKWORMS
Hookworms formed in late 2009 at a time when most of the group’s members were also playing together in a snappy punk group. The punk and garage background is important, because it has a lot to do with the energy that makes Hookworms so noticeable. The singer and keyboard player delivers his vocals like The Gun Club’s Jeffery Lee Pierce on Fire of Love - frantic and impassioned. The guitars colour in and around the lines, informed just as much by Flipper’s Ted Falconi as ‘Sister Ray’. Bass grooves lead the way, sage in their wisdom over which path to take. This is tidy stuff, a purposeful and fully conscious journey into the realms of Zoss. It’s also a journey taking place on increasingly large stages, where they’re just as confident at filling the sonic space as at the small venues where they started out.

DEVIN
Hailing from New York, Devin signed to Frenchkiss in the States after label owner Syd Butler saw his compelling live performance, these UK shows will be no less raucous.
Devin’s debut EP entitled ‘You’re Mine’ is three tracks of classic rock & roll infused with elements of soul and punk; the passion of his vocal delivery combined with the high energy melodies introduce Devin as an exceptionally exciting artist. ‘You’re Mine’ was written while Devin worked at a Brooklyn shipping warehouse and contains what he calls his “first good songs”.
Having already been tipped by NME and Guardian Guide as well as strong radio support from Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens, Xfm’s John Kennedy and Mary Anne Hobbs and 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, these live shows will mark Devin out as a major new artist and one to watch for 2012.

Beth Jeans Houghton [Gig]

BETH JEANS HOUGHTONAND THE HOOVES OF DESTINY
Debut album “Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose” introduces one of the most self-assured new artists of the year, a pop polymath whose blend of psychedelia, glam rock and chain gang folk is quite unlike anything else you’re likely to hear in 2012. Like her utterly unique stage outfits, it’s made from disparate individual elements that wouldn’t work on paper, but sing out like a holy choir in the execution.
On Atlas, a pounding drum beat and twanging guitars give way to soaring vocals and even a freaky spoken word bit, it is entirely typical of an album that’s anything but typical. Having spoken about wanting her music to sound like she’s marching to war, the album presents her as a psychedelic Boudica, rousing the troops with near-operatic vocals one minute and counting the dead in moments of smoky-voiced melancholia the next.
Adding muscle to Beth’s far-ranging vocals are her band The Hooves Of Destiny. Comprising Dav Shiel (drums, vocals samples) Rory Gibson (bass, vocals), Ed Blazey (guitar, trumpet, vocals) and Findlay Macaskill (violin, vocals), they’re a crack unit recruited from Beth’s native North East. Songs about boys and dreams have never sounded so forceful and proud as these, and there’s plenty more to unpick in Beth’s hugely inventive lyrics.

GOODNIGHT LENIN
Formed in the autumn of 2009, Goodnight Lenin’s songs are reminiscent of the singer songwriters of the 1960s & 1970s, whilst still being relevant to the modern day listener. Inspired by Dylan, Young and Simon & Garfunkel, they constantly strive to deliver honest, experience based lyrics that flow along into their carefully crafted sound that seamlessly crosses genres.
In the beginning, Goodnight Lenin remained undiscovered until a video from a low key gig played in a friend’s kitchen surfaced online. Shortly afterwards they were booked to headline the Lunar Stage at Moseley Folk Festival where they performed immediately before another of their great inspirations - Donovan. The aptly named ‘Kitchen Tour’ was to continue throughout the start of 2010, whilst also playing shows with First Aid Kit, Darwin Deez, The Features and opening British Sea Power’s festival ‘Sing From Ye Hillsides’ as well playing a packed out set at Bestival.
At the end of 2010, Goodnight Lenin entered the studio with Brian Duffy (Modified Toy Orchestra) and Tim Felton (Broadcast & Seeland) to record their debut EP ‘The Wenceslas Square EP’.Following appearances at 14 UK festivals including Glastonbury, Kendal Calling, Lounge on the farm and Larmer Tree amongst others they released their debut EP on 23rd July. Goodnight Lenin will continue touring the EP throughout 2011 before heading home for a special winter show.

Three Trapped Tigers [Gig]

THREE TRAPPED TIGERS
London's Three Trapped Tigers are a highly original act who stand-out within a burgeoning UK experimental scene. Three hugely talented musicians from widely ranging backgrounds, as TTT they come together as one futuristic explosion of sound, pushing the boundaries of new music, and are one of the most exciting and thrilling live acts currently playing. Following from their sold out shows at The Garage and Cargo last year, Three Trapped Tigers announce a special intimate launch show at a unique new arts and music space as part of Village Underground to celebrate the release of the three EPs that preceded last year's critically acclaimed "Route One Or Die". Having sold out the three EPs (EP 1 released in 2008, EP 2 in 2009 and EP 3 in 2010), the 13 tracks mapping the 3 year evolution of a band have now been re-mastered and re-pressed as a collected release ‘Numbers: 1-13’, out on Blood and Biscuits on March 5th.

GALLOPS
A blur of a four-headed machine, weaving mechanically pivoting structures of sound that evoke imagery of retro videogame dystopias and B-movie horror soundtracks. It’s fair to say that Welsh instrumentalists Gallops are a band whose music transcends the sum of their basic components. The band made an initial impression last year with a debut self-titled EP that saw them take carefully calculated segments of math-rock and gleefully throw them together with force, before feeding the resulting amalgamations through what sounded like a mutated ZX Spectrum.
Returning with new double A-side ‘Joust/Eukodol’ it’s clear that the four-piece are, like their music, always looking to progressing forward, each new output a chance to move on, re-think, evolve. Now though there’s an increased fluency with which they steer between their composite sections, with an increased attention to providing a rhythmic groove that they can hang off.

Gang Colours [Gig]

Presenting a special launch for the forthcoming "The Keychain Collection" at Dalston's The Vortex for an extremely exciting new artist, Gang Colours, released on Giles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings.

GANG COLOURS
“Whenever I used to get an album, I’d always be drawn to the slower song,” Gang Colours (aka Will Ozanne) admits. “Even on Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Boy In Da Corner’, I loved that track ‘Brand New Day’; it was just really simple and quite emotive.” Similarly, it’s the emotive, dreamy quality of Gang Colours’ debut album ‘The Keychain Collection’, that really strikes you from the outset. Floating in ambiguity, not leaning towards one genre nor another, its organic simplicity leads to a unique groove: one that maybe hasn’t been paved just yet. Aligning the symbolism of his childhood keychain collection as doorways to distant memories, leagues of meaning hide in the simplicity of the song titles assembled on his debut album.
Striking out in June 2011 with his debut EP ‘In Your Gut Like A Knife’ – a neat summary of his electronic excursions at that point – the beautifully artworked 12” acted as a portal into a world of daydreams, tumbling into shadows and embracing luminescence simultaneously. Breeding surreal headphone-friendly landscapes, he struck a peculiar and delicate balance between otherworldly and familiarity, at times sneaking a sly glance towards the dancefloor but mostly conjuring a sense of longing and rye melancholy.
Taking a step back from chopped ‘n’ screwed RnB vocals and the swing of UKG, ‘The Keychain Collection’ explores more sombre recesses within Gang Colours’ palette. The scattered technicolour synth melodies that characterised his EP are present, but softer… cosier even… weaving betwixt and between forthright piano chords and Will’s own vocals. This sees an album launch show for "The Key Chains Collection" at Dalston's seated Vortex venue, complete with grand piano.

Monument Valley [Gig]

MONUMENT VALLEY
Monument Valley is the musical world of London-born Ned Younger. Inspired by classic 1950s rock and roll, Postcard-era indie-pop and the modern poets of hip hop, Younger weaves all his musical touchstones into a passion for timeless story-telling and song-writing. An extremely exciting and talented new UK song writing talent, his first release, the Tongues EP was released November 28 on Tri-tone/PIAS Records. Following national tours with Benjamin Francis Leftwich and Daughter at the end of 2011, as part of a new release in March, Monument Valley will be embarking on his first headline tour of UK in March, and this sees the London date at the intimate Slaughtered Lamb venue.
Despite the expansive moniker, it is under the Monument Valley alias that Younger has created an introspective and articulate EP. The seeds of this project had been unwittingly sewn some time ago, during the accumulation of an extensive collection of strangers’ ‘lost’ photographs, which Younger had gradually amassed from markets and car boot sales. It was whilst surveying the hundreds of anonymous faces of these ‘John Doe’ albums that Younger was struck by the thought which spawned Tongues - to narrate the imagined stories behind these images, and thus to articulate the silent and the unfamiliar.

CASS MCCOMBS
Cass McCombs was born in 1977 and raised inNorthern California. He is of the generation that grew up hearing the stories still fresh on people’s minds: Zodiac killings, Zebra killings, Manson, Black Panthers, SLA, riots, People’s Park, LSD, etc. These were the local legends and became the basis for McCombs’ imagination. He is a child of the 70s. Since leaving the area, he lived many years drifting theU.S.until ever attempting to make music seriously. He has said that from this experience he learned to listen to people’s stories from many walks of life. Instead of university, this was his education.
Humor Risk is his sixth-and-a-half record, and second to be released in 2011, following Wit’s End, which featured the tragic song “CountyLine”. Musically, it is more rhythm-based, and with a heavier lyricism, than its sparse predecessor. Both were compiled from recordings made over the course of three years, in various places such as New York City, New Jersey, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles and mixed in a single session and divided into albums.

MIKE HERON
Together with Robin Williamson and Clive Palmer, Mike Heron was a founder member of The Incredible String Band. Formed in Edinburgh in 1965, they soon broke from the folk club beginnings they shared with other emerging artists such as Bert Jansch, John Martyn, Davey Graham and Billy Connolly to pioneer an eclectic "world music" approach.
Signed by Joe Boyd to Witchseason, they produced over 10 seminal albums including "Five Thousand Spirits or the Layers of the Onion", the Grammy nominated "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter", and "Wee Tam and The Big Huge". In 1969 they were the only Scottish band to appear at Woodstock.
Together with a dance group "Stone Monkey" the ISB formed the nucleus of a late sixties artistic community in the Scottish Borders experimenting with theatre, film, and a wide variety of music, until their final incarnation as a six piece band. More recently Mike has been performing with his daughter, singer/songwriter Georgia Seddon.

Los Campesinos [Gig]

Following the a sellout King's College show to launch their fantastic fourth album "Hello Sadness", Los Campesinos! return to London to play The Electric Ballroom in March

LOS CAMPESINOS!
‘Hello Sadness’ is the fourth record by Los Campesinos!, and if 2009’s ‘Romance Is Boring’ marked a giant step on from their genesis – seven kids and a glockenspiel, ricocheting off the four walls of a Cardiff rehearsal room – ‘Hello Sadness’ constitutes another step, and a turn of the corner. These 10 tracks cover what we are coming to recognise as core Los Campesinos! concerns – love, loss, heartbreak, football (always football). But this is a record that’s wiser and more focused than its predecessors, confident in its abilities and clear in its aims.
“It feels like we’ve done all our growing up while in this band,” says vocalist Gareth Campesinos! “Not like we’re Hanson, or anything. But we’ve been Los Campesinos! since finishing university, and in that time we’ve all changed as people massively. That’s something we want to put across in the music.”
Gone is the hypertense, panic-attack rattle that characterised ‘We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed’, and the melancholy wallow that you heard in corners of ‘Romance Is Boring’ is in short supply. Play it more, though, and you hear an emotion that comes from somewhere softer, deeper, and – dare we say it – more authentic.

MAPS & ATLASES [Gig]

We're delighted to announce the return to the UK of Maps and Atlases with their release of their excellent second album, and a show at The Garage following their sellout appearance at XOYO last year.

MAPS & ATLASES
Davison, Shiraz Dada (bass), Chris Hainey (drums), and Erin Elders (guitar) all met as students at Columbia College in Chicago. The band spent two years touring behind its two EPs - both of which were recorded by Dada. On both, Maps & Atlases honed a sound that combined the tightly wound technical proficiency of Don Caballero and Hella but with songwriting, arrangements, and harmonies that aimed for sky rather than gut.
Maps & Atlases return to Europein support of their sophomore album ‘Beware And Be Grateful’ which is due for release on 16th April. Musically, ‘Beware And Be Grateful’ is a mature progression for the band, who started life being labelled as ‘math-rock’, and have now found themselves writing intelligent pop music. The band are known for putting on a terrific live performance, which often ends in an intimate acoustic set for any fans who don’t rush off after the last song.
