Rockfeedback & Transgressive SXSW Official Showcase in assoc. with PRS [Gig]

For the third year running, we here at Rockfeedback are once again shipping ourselves off to the Deep South depths of America for one of the most exciting and innovative of the year’s music events, Texas’ South By South West festival. After the success of our showcase at last year’s festival we decided to expand somewhat. So, in conjunction with our sister label Transgressive Records we are very proud to announce the line-up for our showcase, to be held at Latitude 30:

9:00 – 9: 30 - Chew LipsMinimalist dance pop band Chew Lips formed in South London in 2008, and in January 2010 released the Unicorn LP to rave reviews. It's a debut that couples techno beats with smart mouthed and edgy vocals that wedge themselves into one’s brain from listen number one.

10.00-10.30 - Banjo or FreakoutAlesso Natalizia – the bedroom-pop dreamweaver who records as Banjo or Freakout – honed his skills creating intimate, atmospheric interpretations of tracks by artists from Burial to High Places, but quickly evolved into writing blissfully scuzzy, lo-fi acoustic electronica with the kind of metronomic pulse that Animal Collective would be proud to call their own. Performing with a full band, specially for us.

11.00-11.30 - Johnny Flynn and the Sussex WitBoth part of a strong movement of talented young British folk musicians and also enjoying a place in a scene that is very much his own, Johnny Flynn – multi instrumentalist, masterful lyricist, artist, actor, poet... the list goes on – saw critical acclaim across the board for his debut album A Larum, released in 2008. Its highly anticipated follow up is due imminently.

12.00-12.30 - Male BondingRecent Sub Pop signings Male Bonding make the kind of rabble-rousing, lo-fi punk that sounds like it’s being thrashed out on a rusty guitar and corroded iron drums. We’ve managed to collar them for a few of such noises whilst on their whistle-stop tour of the U.S.

1.00-1.30 - The InvisibleDave Okumu, Tom Herbert and Leo Taylor may have been well known to London scenesters in various different guises for some time, yet it was only with their self titled debut LP in 2009 that The Invisible became public property, earning a Mercury Music Prize nomination for their soulful blend of rock and electronica.

Righto, hopefully see you there. - Rockfeedback & Transgressive SXSW Official Showcase in assoc. with PRS

Rockfeedback SXSW Red House Pizzeria Patio party in assoc. with Music For Listeners + Transgressive [Gig]

Not content with just hosting our own showcase at Texas’ South By Southwest festival, we here at Rockfeedback have decided to chuck the cat out with the cooks and throw a full-on party as well. In association with San Antonio radio station Music For Listeners, we’re putting on an evening of some of our favourite bands, all in a Pizzeria in the middle of Texas. Excited? Sure, why, yes we are. Aaand here come the bands….

6:00 p.m. – Bear in Heaven
Bear in Heaven started out as Jon Philpot, alone, in a studio, after hours, in Atlanta Georgia. Then he moved to New York and it was him, all alone, in his room, unemployed, trying to figure out how to make music in his bedroom and get a job. Though not quite coming out of nowhere, BIH have a surprise gift - a striking consolidation of spiky psych-prog tendencies into a pop framework.

5:00 p.m. – Lovvers
Based nowhere and residing pretty much everywhere, Lovvers is compromised of four ambitious nobodies who have tellingly appeared at a moment in musical history that can only described as a yawning deluded mess. Lovvers are a strange mix of music's forgotten / blank generation, re-calling the spirit of Darby Crashes' Germs, the weirdness of Flipper, Wipers style pop and the careless attitude of The Replacements; at one show a girl was so confused / annoyed that she wrote to KERRANG! describing this music as highly offensive, wanting to erase them from her mind. We however love ‘em so much that we let their drummer Steve write for us from time to time.

4:00 p.m - Lawrence Arabia Lawrence Arabia is the pseudonym of James Milne, born 1981 in Christchurch, New Zealand. James has already established a rich musical resume as a former member of the Brunettes, The Ruby Suns and one time touring member of Okkervil River. He has also produced for films and theatre and wrote the score for the indie film hit, Eagle vs Shark. His music has got that lazy-feel pop touch, with gentle African and Hawaiian hints wandering amongst the rhythms and the guitars.

3:00 p.m. The Smith Westerns Chicago's The Smith Westerns are a fuzzy lo-fi band that has lots of pretty (and slightly psych-y) melodies floating in and around some serious (mostly) garage-rock goodness. But this isn't garage-rock in the aggressive "my riffs will start a fire and make even this here pile of greasy rags EXPLODE!" kind of way. This is the garage in the sensitive hearts "tool box, everything I do, I do it for you" kind of way.

2:00 p.m. Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit Britain has a long history of producing bards and troubadours. From Shakespeare to Strummer, the nation has spawned countless tale-spinners whose words resonate with drama and humor, knife-twisting wit and unabashed romanticism -- a lineage that's been transported into the new millennium by Johnny Flynn, a South African emigre whose flair for blending folk tradition and decidedly of-the-moment perspective marks him as an artist capable of captivating at first listen and for the long haul.

1:00 p.m. – Soko half folky / half punky half french / half polish half actress / half music-nerd half singing / half talking half dreaming / half dancing half joking / half deep half tearful / half crazy half wise / half child totally wild totally vegan always unpredictable

12:00 p.m. - Stricken City
Indie in the old-fashioned 'look at us we design our own t-shirts and our guitarist learnt to play in a week' sense, Stricken City's sound recalls all sorts of lovely things put out by Rough Trade and Postcard in the mid-80s. 'Songs About People I Know' oozes with fun and spontaneity, like 'Gifted', an a capella ditty recorded on a London bus. Kind of wonderful.
All this along with guest DJ Ali from Dance To The Radio Records. It’s going to be a gas. - Rockfeedback SXSW Red House Pizzeria Patio party in assoc. with Music For Listeners + Transgressive

SUMMER CAMP (single launch) / SPECTRALS / BABE SHADOW [Gig]

SUMMER CAMP
The identities of one of everyone's biggest musical adores of recent months have been revealed! Those hounds over at Stool Pigeon have exclusively revealed that Summer Camp are not, as initially claimed, a group of seven Swedes who met at summer camp when they were teenagers, but in fact are troubadour Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey! Backed by others live, Summer Camp will release their first single on Moshi Moshi in April, and this will be their first memorable first full live appearance proper, in order to celebrate. Musically it's hard not to be instantly charmed by their idyllic, infectious love songs where distortion-wrapped boy/girl vocals innocently swoon and swoop over heavenly guitars and synths. Perfectly formed and steeped in aching nostalgia for hazy aural enjoyment, their instantly effective pop pick-me ups are the sound of summer love and the perfect antidote to a seemingly never ending winter.

SPECTRALS
Spectrals is a British 60s influenced noise pop project fronted by one man, simply known as 'L'. Playing the kind of reverb soaked psych pop backed with inaudible vocals, that sounds like it could havebeen recorded at Gold Star in 1965. He’s put out material on U.S. label Captured Tracks - darlings of the lo-fi scene who are responsible for the brilliant likes of Thee Oh Sees, Blank Dogs and Woods and is currently on tour with seminal buzz band Girls. Enigmatic as his title suggests, here is a perfect chance to learn more about the man.

BABE SHADOW
London's Babe Shadow are the type of musical incarnation with songs impossible to dislodge from the brain for days on end. They emcompass both a traditional folk sound that references a feverent melting-pot so prevelant in the capital right now, whilst also embracing an otherworldly tropical oasis of holiday fun, sporting an uplifting and almost beach-reminciscent playground of musical frivolity. Calling to mind everything from Mystery Jets to XTC, beefed with a clear pop sensibility, the duo (backed by live band) appear here before a high profile support slot on the upcoming May Florence and Machine tour.

Plus Rockfeedback DJs will be spinning records between the bands. Buy Tickets Doors are at 7.30pm, and it takes place at The Lexingto, 96-98 Pentonville Road (Angel/Kings Cross tube) on Thursday 8th April.

"Over the Green Hills" feat. CAITLIN ROSE + special guests [Gig]

Rockfeedback presents...
"Over The Green Hills"
The second installment of our new nights feauring the best new acts in the country, alt-folk and classic songsmiths vein, and is our first show at The wonderfully new revamped Old Queens Head venue on Essex Road.

CAITLIN ROSE - Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee is something of a burden, when you’re a country singer. But 22 year old Caitlin Rose is no ordinary country singer. Blessed with a startling, precocious native talent, a silvery, bell-clear, brilliant voice and crucially, an undeniable charisma along with defiant songwriting style all her own, Caitlin Rose draws to mind the pure country pop of Jenny Lewis, the early folk experiments of Beck and the sheer cheek of Moldy Peaches, underlying a gigantic vocal talent scaling the heights of Neko Case alongside her obvious adoration of Linda Ronstadt, Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris and Patsy Cline. Recent single release Dead Flowers’ is a distilled taste of Caitlin Rose, and a fine precursor to a full length album due later in 2010, already receiving rave reviews, Rose takes the simplicity of country music and connects it with the excitement of forward-thinking and original American young and independent sounds. For Rose, it's a lot easier to describe, she explains simply; “I wanted to sing my guts out.” This show part of her hotly anticipated first visit to the UK for live appearances
"Terrific from start to finish" - Uncut"Her voice is extraordinary" - The Guardian+ SPECIAL GUESTS
+ IKTOMS DJS and ROCKFEEDBACK DJS
The venue is The Old Queens Head, 44 Essex Rd, a mere stumble from Angel station. Doors are at 7.30.
Tickets are a paltry £6 and can be purchased here - Over the Green Hills feat. CAITLIN ROSE / special guests
